The current enterprise agreement is due to expirein June.

Mr Sharma said new ticketing technologies, rising patronage and the delivery of major upgrades also need to be taken into account.

If protected industrial action is given the green light, workers covered by the pay deal – including train drivers and station staff – will take part in a ballot to endorse measures includoing a possible 48 hour stoppage.

The union said it was committed to minimising the impact on the travelling public.
