An alleged car thief has been arrested after running out of petrol during a police pursuit.

The silver Ford Falcon was first spotted travelling east on the Princes Highway in Terang just before 5pm on Monday, the dirver allegedly taking off at speed when police tried to intercept in Camperdown.

Highway Patrol officers then detected the car in Larpent, following it for a short distance before it reportedly sped off towards Colac.

Police thought they had lost track of the vehicle, alleging it narrowly missed other motorists and drove in emergency lanes.

The car later reappeared in Winchelsea, the male driver seen getting out of the vehicle after pulling into a service station, though he was quick to take off again when he saw a police van close behind.

It’s alleged he took off at speed, driving on the wrong side of the road and turning back on to the Princes Freeway in the direction of Geelong.

The vehicle came to a stop a short time later though as it ran out of fuel, with a 39-year-old Warrnambool man arrested at the scene and taken into custody.

He was charged with a number of offences including contravening a bail condition by driving a motor vehicle and conduct endangering life.
