Bird flu cases confirmed on Surf Coast

The first confirmed cases of H5 bird flu have been reported on the Surf Coast.

Two deceased birds found in separate locations in Torquay have tested positive for the strain.

Surf Coast Shire is urging residents to avoid touching sick or dead birds or wildlife, and instead report the suspected cases.

Locals are are being urged to keep dogs on a lead, and wash hands thoroughly after outdoor activities.

The risk to human health remains low, but Mayor Libby Stapleton said seeing sick or dead birds could be concerning.

“The most important thing we can all do right now is avoid touching sick or dead birds, keep pets away from them, and report sightings to Agriculture Victoria,” Cr Stapleton said.

“Anyone with poultry should also closely follow the advice about how best to keep their flocks safe.

“We also need to reinforce that the risk to human health remains low.”
