Well over a dozen CFA vehicles have worked to put out a private burn-off which got out of hand south-west of Geelong as temperatures rose on Wednesday afternoon.

Several small grass fires were reported around the Nortons Rd area of Paraparap at around 3.30pm, with the fires escaping from a nearby private burn-off.

At one stage 16 vehicles were on scene to bring the blazes under control within about an area, with the scene declared safe by 4.30pm.

14 vehicles remained on scene throughout the evening to monitor the incident as temperatures reached as high as 29 degrees late Wednesday.

Thursday’s set to bring a cool change across the region with a top of 18 degrees and a high chance of showers during the morning.

No fire restrictions are in force yet for Greater Geelong or the Surf Coast, as we head towards an expected hotter and drier summer period.

The Fire Danger Period may be declared as early as October in some municipalities, and typically remains in place until the fire danger lessens, which could be as late as May.
