A warning for locals to ensure any burn-offs are completely extinguished.
CFA crews were called to a grass fire off Sproules Road, Wallington around 3pm Sunday.
The fire authority says the blaze started from burn-off piles the owner thought was out, but they reignited and spread in the dry conditions and wind.
Firefighters were able to put out the flames but say if it was later in the year, the fire could have been larger and burnt far quicker.
Anyone planning a burn is being advised to register them, and to also ensure a bare earth barrier is put around the pile to reduce the risk of flames spreading.
