A group of business leaders have added their voices to the push against the proposed Lara incinerator.
It comes with a community rally against the project set to be held on Sunday morning at Austin Park.
The group – which includes Lino and Richard Bisinella, Keith Fagg, David Thornton and Jacinta Begley – says the project is unsustainable, and creates risk both to locals and to the environment.
“As business leaders connected with thousands of Geelong residents and generating significant economic activity for the region we live in and love, it is our obligation to speak up on this potentially disastrous proposal and to help give our community a voice,” a co-signed letter to the premier says.
“There is considerable anxiety in the community and legitimate concerns about the incinerator’s potential impact on crops, animals and air and water quality.
“None of this was subject to any meaningful assessment prior to the EPA’s approval.
“For a project of such a significant scale, community consultation was inadequate, and we understand the proponent has been unresponsive to questions raised by the community.
“This is not part of the future we want for Geelong. Our city is one of Victoria’s fastest growing areas and a wonderful place for young families to come to live.
“We cannot allow something like this to be imposed on this community.”
A rally is set to be held at Austin Park in Lara on Sunday at 10am.
