Canadian warship turns Surf Coast heads

The presence of a Canadian flagged warship off the coast is drawing plenty of local interest.

Suspected to be the HMCS Montreal, the frigate was clocked by a photographer at Bells Beach on Sunday.

Marine tracking apps confirmed the presence of the Canadian boat off the coast tracking south west.

Australia has been hosting a series of war games off the Queensland and New South Wales coast in recent weeks which have been attended by numerous allied countries including Canada.

Photos of the 30-year old warship captured through a long lens prompted questions about its seemingly dilapidated state, with large areas of rust apparent on the hull and a roughly executed pennant number.
