Cliff collapse from Mornington earthquake

A section of cliffs around Jarosite Point near Bells Beach have been closed to the public after it collapsed.

The section of the rock face collapsing in the aftermath of yesterday’s 3.1 magnitude earthquake on the Mornington Peninsula.

Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority saying there remain major cracks, meaning further collapses are likely.

“Around 100 metres of the cliff face has failed, with 20 metres of rock debris falling to the base. Large cracks remain in the cliff, making further falls highly likely,” it said.

“To protect public safety, a closure will be implemented and people are urged to obey all warning and closure signs.

“Parks Victoria and the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority are monitoring the site closely and are out checking other high-risk areas, as the earthquake may have triggered other cliff falls in the region.”
