An update to lifeguarding hours at Eastern Beach, with the City of Greater Geelong looking to protect the community after the local waterfront was named a ‘drowning blackspot’ by Life Saving Victoria.

Lifeguards will patrol the pool and dive tour from 12pm-5pm each day until Sunday 21 December, originally meant to be on site for weekends only.

These hours will increase from Monday 22 December until Saturday 28 February, with lifeguards monitoring 10am-7pm during the peak summer period.

The local council said the area would remain open outside the patrolled hours.

Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj has called it great news for swimmers.

“Safety is our top priority and this change means swimmers can enjoy the water with confidence every day of the week,” Mayor Kontelj said.

“With extra support from the Victorian Government and Life Saving Victoria, we’ve been able to start weekday patrols earlier than planned.”
