A Surf Coast Shire Councillor has resigned effective immediately.

Torquay ward Councillor Rebecca Bourke submitted her resignation on Thursday afternoon, telling locals it’s been a privilege to represent them.

“This decision was not easy. I care deeply for our community, however, I need to prioritise my young family’s wellbeing at this point in time,” she said.

“I remain incredibly proud of what we have achieved together during my time on council, and I am committed to supporting our community and families through my personal volunteer work and my mental health practice.”

The Council’s CEO Robyn Seymour has thanked Mrs Bourke for her service.

“During her time on Council, Mrs Bourke has shown a genuine passion for representing her local community. We wish her and her family all the best,” she said.

“We have notified the Local Government Minister and the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) of Mrs Bourke’s resignation.”

“The VEC will run a countback process from the 2024 local government election to determine a new councillor for the Torquay Ward. We will keep the community advised of the timing and outcome of this process.”
