The AFL has reportedly approached Geelong captain Patrick Dangerfield about taking a seat on the sport’s governing body, in what would be a radical shake-up of the AFL Commission.Outgoing AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan and league chairman Richard Goyder have spoken with Dangerfield about the proposal that would see him secure a seat on the board even as he continues as a player, according to a report in The Age.
33-year-old Dangerfield, an eight-time All-Australian i considered to be among the game’s most influential players and is known for his outspoken views.
He is president of the AFL Players Association after being elected in 2018. If he were to accepts a position on the AFL Commission he would be required to relinquish his position with the AFLPA.
The report in The Age, written by leading football journalist Caroline Wilson, quoted a confidential source who said discussions were confidential and that Dangerfield was “considering” the offer.
An AFL spokesperson told Wilson that a “process” was underway but that the league would not provide a running commentary.
Dangerfield has given no indication about his playing future but it is widely believed he plans to play on in 2024.
