Dozens arrested as family violence spikes in Geelong

Dozens of people have been arrested as part of a three-day Victoria Police operation cracking down on family violence.

Almost 70 offenders have been taken into custody amid a spike in family violence across the state including in Geelong.

Officers served 47 family violence intervention orders and executed 58 outstanding warrants over the three days of the recent operation in the Southern Metro Region.

Statewide, police say they arrest one family violence perpetrator every 18 minutes, with the latest crime statistics suggesting an increase in arrests in Greater Geelong.

“We’ve made dozens of arrests as part of this operation,” Inspector Rodney Maroney said.

“It shows just how serious we are in ensuring family violence offenders are held responsible for their actions and the harm they wreak on their partners and children.

“Family violence is never acceptable. It can never be excused and it can never be justified.

“That’s why we will continue to work tirelessly to proactively target and apprehend offenders and keep victims safe.”

There have been just over 5,000 family violence incidents in our region already this year, up 5.4% on the same time last year.

Breaching a family violence order was the most common offence recorded out of all crime in the last year, with over 3,000 recorded.
