keep left booked surf coast eyewatchA unique police operation has led officers to fine a driver for failing to keep left.

Surf Coast police informed locals at the start of the week it would be targeting drivers along the Surf Coast Highway who were failing to keep left unless overtaking.

On Wednesday, police said they issued a fine to a driver for failing to keep left for 1km at about 2.30 pm, issuing them with a $192 and the loss of two demerit points.

Officers said the driver’s excuse was they were ‘listening to the radio.’

The crackdown has drawn a fond response from locals, one taking to the Surf Coast Police Eyewatch Facebook page to say “one of the few trivial road laws that should actually be enforced more often!”

Drivers are reminded if they’re driving on a multi-lane road with a speed limit of 80km/h or more, or where there’s a ‘keep left’ sign, you need to keep left unless overtaking.

The exceptions are: if you’re turning right or if you’re making a U-turn from the centre of the road.
