Drivers told to watch out for roos on the road

Local police are urging drivers to keep an eye out for wildlife on our roads.

Officers across Geelong and the Surf Coast have warned of a rise in road accidents involving kangaroos recently.

They said they’re that while they’re always happy to help out a joey, it often doesn’t end well for the mothers.

They’ve provided the following advice to motorists across the region on their Eyewatch pages:

  • Slow down at dawn and dusk. This is when most wildlife is active.
  • Stay alert in all conditions. Scan for animals, especially in fog or rain.
  • Stay vigilant! Scan the roadside for wildlife and pay attention to crossing signs.
  • Adjust your speed to road conditions to avoid potential collisions.
  • If you see one kangaroo, expect more. Other mob members may follow.

They’ve urged locals to contact 136 186 if they encounter an injured animal.
