Locals on the Bellarine have another option to cool off, with the first stage of the Northern Bellarine Aquatic Centre now open.
The facility at Drysdale includes a 50m outdoor lap pool.
Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan said it would give the city’s gym and aquatic members another option.
“We’re seeing numbers across all of our aquatic facilities absolutely bursting at the seams right now,” Cr Sullivan said.
“This is something that has been identified, not only by ourselves but by senior industry experts.
“It’s an area that has been incredibly, incredibly needed.”
Cr Sullivan hoped the full facility, including stage two, would be completed within a year or two.
Meantime, Lara’s outdoor pool has reopened today ahead of the summer season.
The mayor hinted at potential upgrades to the pool in the future, given the growing popularity.
“Lara pool’s one that’s highly used by the local community in the north,” he said.
“We really might have to have another project to expand the pool out there – the numbers they get out there are fantastic.”
