A mother, father and three-year-old boy from the Geelong area have been killed in a collision between a truck and a car in Stoneleigh.

Another passenger, the young boy’s grandmother, has been airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Emergency services were called to the small town west of Ballarat around 9.30am on Tuesday.

It’s understood the car spun multiple times after the collision, with Detective Inspector Craig McEvoy saying it appears to have been crushed.

“We believe the car has travelled through the stop sign. The truck had right of way and at this point in time, it appears there’s no fault of the truck involved,” he said.

“There’s nothing to indicate excessive speed was a factor.”

“It’s a rural road. There are stop sign precautions, warning signs before the intersection, and it appears that unfortunately the stop signs and the precautions haven’t been followed.”

“This intersection alone there are precaution signs, there are warning signs hundreds of metres before the intersection with clear visible signage, so I don’t know how it’s been missed.”
