Geelong has played a key role in war in the Ukraine – with the Port of Geelong being used to send upwards of 40 M1A1 Abrams Tanks to the Ukraine.

Australia purchased the tanks in 2007, but never used them in combat before replacing them with M1A2 tanks.

The tanks were shipped from Geelong back in May – which was unable to be revealed due to security concerns.

“The M1A1 Abrams tanks will make a significant contribution to Ukraine’s ongoing fight against Russia’s illegal and immoral invasion,” defence minister and Corio MP Richard Marles said.

“I was pleased to meet the Australian Army personnel who helped facilitate the delivery of these tanks from Australia to Ukraine.

“Australia remains steadfast in our support for Ukraine and seeing a just and lasting peace.”
