Geelong’s live site at Johnstone Park is set to go ahead of the Socceroos clash with Paraguay this morning.
The Aussies need to at least draw to keep second spot in their group match, with the team also a chance of advancing with a loss of less than two goals.
Acting mayor Eddy Kontelj says the first game against Turkey saw a strong turn out from fans, and hopes to again.
“It was a great crowd for a lunchtime,” he said.
“And we’re hoping to see the same today with workers from the shops and businesses around town coming down.”
Live sites will be taking place all around the state, including the traditional Fed Square site in Melbourne.
Sports Minister Steve Dimopolous says these games are best watched together:
“There’s something really special about it,” he said.
“Seeing the Socceroos on the global stage in the global game, it brings people together.”
Geelong Broadcasters’ street team will be on site from 11.30 for the midday kick off.
And with rumours of a national increase in sickies, Kontelj chose to channel a former Australian leader.
“If I could phrase Bob Hawke, any boss who sacks someone for coming to the live site is a bum,” he said.
“I’m really hoping we can see a lot of people come down.”
