How Geelong fares in Vic budget

Geelong features in the Victorian budget, with money going towards health, education and public transport.

Labor has announced $10 million to meet growing demand for Barwon Health’s Hospital in the Home beds program.

That is on top of funding already allocated for the paediatric emergency department at University Hospital Geelong.

The region will share in more than $100 million to buy land for new schools, while there is also funding for upgrades for schools including Surfside Primary.

The government has announced $13 million for the Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention centre and the Victorian Convention and Exhibition Trust.

Almost $500,000 will be spent supporting five Basketball High Performance Hubs across the state including Geelong.

While another $4.2 million will be used to replace marine and rescue search boats at Torquay and Port Welshpool.

The Allan government says it will invest $14.8 million to deliver longer, nine-car trains on the Wyndham Vale line during peak times.

There is also funding for a new bus route between Drysdale and Ocean Grove.

There is also free public transport during May, with half price tickets for the rest of the year.

Treasurer Jaclyn Symes has announced a $1 billion surplus for the next financial year, but the state will ow $176 billion.

Debt is expected to nudge $200 billion within the next four years.
