More than 250 drivers face fines, demerit points and/or loss of licence after a police blitz on roads across Geelong and the Surf Coast over the Melbourne Cup unofficial long weekend.
Police saturated the state as part of the annual Operation Furlong, which targets dangerous driver behaviours such as speeding and alcohol.
157 people were booked for speeding over the four days, with a further 26 caught with alcohol or illicit drugs in their systems.
23 people were caught driving without a licence or on a suspended licence, while 33 vehicles were found to be unregistered.
Police on the Surf Coast detected a total of 132 offences, slightly more than Geelong with 124.
Sadly, the best efforts of police were not enough to prevent 13 deaths across the state, bringing the number of lives lost on Victorian roads to the highest level in 15 years.
The road toll currently stands at 251, the most since this time in 2008 when 256 people had lost their lives to road trauma.
Eleven of this year’s 13 long weekend fatalities occurred outside the metropolitan area
