Kontelj brothers to lead council

The Kontelj brothers are officially the leaders of Geelong council.

Eddy voted into the deputy mayors role at a special meeting of council last night, replacing Ron Nelson after he vacated the position.

The duo will remain mayor and deputy until November when the next vote is held.

Mayor Stretch congratulating his brother on his appointment.

“Cr Kontelj brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position, and is passionate about representing Greater Geelong,” he said.

“I look forward to working constructively with him.”

The Hamlyn Heights ward councillor has been a member of council close to 15 years over two tenures.

Eddy saying it was an honour to be appointed.

“To the community, thank you for trusting in me since 2010,” he said.

“To represent you at council in this chamber is one of the greatest honours of my life. It’s not something I take lightly. I am extremely proud and will do the best possible job for the community.

“I certainly feel like today I’m in the strongest position I’ve ever been in to take on deputy mayor, both in capacity and capability.”
