Labor has returned serve at the Coalition’s election promise to increase security in a local shopping area.

Local MP Christine Couzens is urging Geelong council to apply for funding to get CCTV cameras on Pakington Street.

The member for Geelong says a Local Community Safety Infrastructure Fund helps councils invest in security upgrades.

“I will be writing to Mayor Stretch Kontelj to advise that there is no need to wait for election commitments from political parties to support CCTV initiatives,” she said.

“Through the Victorian Government’s $10 million Local Community Safety Infrastructure Fund, the City of Greater Geelong can apply directly for funding for projects such as CCTV and improved lighting.”

She says it means the city doesn’t need to wait for election commitments.

“This is not about waiting for election promises, it’s about taking action,” she said.

“If Council wants CCTV on Pakington Street, they have the opportunity to seek funding through this dedicated community safety fund.
