Experts say the number of earthquakes in Victoria is on the rise, following a tremor near the Brisbane Ranges that was felt more than 50km away in Geelong.
It struck just before 4.30pm on Thursday and reached a magnitude of 3.1.
It was centred about 30km north-west of Meredith and was reported in a number of Geelong suburbs.
Adam Pasquale from the Seismology Research Centre said quakes in Victoria are not as rare as they once were.
“Certainly in the last few years, since that big one we had in 2021, we’ve seen a lot more activity across the state,” he said.
Mr Pasquale said Thursday’s tremor was in an area that’s experienced them many times before.
“It was near the Brisbane Ranges, those big mountains that are formed by earthquakes over millions of years, it’s fired up again.
“So it’s not an unusual place for an earthquake.”
