Local live sites are expecting bumper crowds for tomorrow night’s do-or-die FIFA Women’s World Cup clash between the Matildas and France.
Melbourne’s Federation Square will host the only public live site, meaning fans hoping to soak up some real amosphere will need to head to one of a number of pubs that are authorised to screen the match.
Werribee’s Park Hotel will feature the game on its big screen as well as numerous televisions scattered around the venue.
Nick Christou, who owns the popular family-friendly venue in Watton Street, told Geelong Broadcasters staff were preparing for a big turnout.
“My suggestion is for people to make a booking,” Mr Christou said.
“We’ll have it on the large screen in the beer garden as well as the other TVs in and around the venue.
Mr Christou said excitement in the local community ahead of the clash was palpable.
“We’re very excited, we’ve been giving out posters to young kids and you see their eyes light up! It’s absolutely fantastic!
“We’ve had a lot of people ringing us asking why no venues were showing the World Cup. We tell them we’ve been showing it the whole time!”
There will be no public live site in Geelong for tomorrow night’s match, although the Sporting Globe hotel in Ryrie Street will screen the game live.
The City of Greater Geelong will consider installing a live site in a public space should the Matildas make it through to the final.
