Local speedsters caught in long weekend road blitz

Police have increased their presence on local roads, looking to keep motorists safe over the Melbourne Cup long weekend with Operation Furlong.

Across the state, more than 6,600 offences were detected, with almost 44% of these for speeding.

70 speedsters were nabbed in the Surf Coast, 97 in Wyndham, while Geelong was the busiest with 158 offences.

40 disqualified drivers were detected across the three local police service areas, while 26 people were caught behind the wheel while unlicensed.

14 unregistered vehicles were spotted across Geelong and the Surf Coast, but the offence was far more prominent in Wyndham where police detected 33 offences.

Geelong police were the busiest in our region when it came to people driving under the influence, nabbing 12 drink drivers and seven drug drivers.

Operation Furlong kicked off on Friday 31 October and ran until Tuesday 4 November.
