Concerns locals will soon have to go ‘cold turkey’ on weight loss drugs due to cost of living pressures.

It has been revealed some of the medications can cost between $200 and $700 a month, depending on the dose, and whether they are on the PBS.

Dietician Adele Mackie from health insurer GMHBA said locals may soon have to decide between household bills and presecriptions.

“It is a significant amount of money that’s coming out of people’s budgets,” she said.

“They need to factor this into their current budget and whether they can afford it.”

Ms Mackie said people use the medication for big results.

“A lot of people aren’t aware that they are long-term medications and that if people do want to sustain their weight loss, they still need to work on lifestyle changes and developing a healthy relationship with food.”
