Geelong will be one of the locations for protests against the state’s new Emergency Services and Volunteer Fund.
Today’s protest will see tankers and units travel to protest in front of MPs offices in Geelong.
The highly controversial levy passed parliament last week.
The protests set to begin at the Batesford Road House before making its way to Brougham Street, and protesting in front of local MPs offices.
Geelong mayor Stretch Kontel last week adding his voice of disappointment to the bill passing.
“Families, farmers and businesses in our community will be pushed to the wall by this increase, which will see the state collect over $55 million from our ratepayers in 2025 – 26, up from just under $37 million in 2024 -25. That’s an increase of over 50 per cent,” he said.
“I understand that the Victorian Government is looking to balance its budget, however, raising a new tax while our community is in the middle of an extreme cost of living crisis is no way to achieve this.”
Protests will also take place in front of parliament, with protests to include “…farmers, firefighters, community members with placards, fire trucks, sausage sizzle, campaign messages on truck-mounted big screens.”
