A fuel reduction program is being held across the Surf Coast Shire over winter with a focus this year on Lorne.

The coast is considered one of the highest fire risk areas in the state and the program is aimed at reducing the risk of fires over summer on public land and private properties.

The council says residents across Lorne will be encouraged to start cleaning up around their properties and homes before the warmer weather hits.

Forest Fire Management Victoria and Parks Victoria will also be holding fuel reduction burns.

Councillor Gary Allen said it was not too early to start preparing for the fire season.

“Reducing the bushfire risk in the Surf Coast Shire is everyone’s responsibility, and summer will be here before we know it,” he said.

“We all remember Christmas Day 2015 and how our neighbours in Wye River were impacted so significantly, and of course the terrible tragedy of Ash Wednesday.”
