New court opens in Geelong

A Specialist Family Violence Court has officially opened in Geelong.

It is the 13th court to open in Victoria, as part of a recommendation from a Royal Commission.

There has been a high demand for specialised family violence facilities in Geelong, with the local Magistrates court hearing more than 15,000 cases in 2025.

The Specialist Family Violence Court provides four separate zones for the public, staff, judiciary and those in custody.

There are also safe waiting areas and remote witness facilities.

Attorney General Sonya Kilkenny said the new court provided safe access to justice for victim survivors.

“We know for anyone how traumatising it can be to come to court,” Ms Kilkenny said.

“And how particularly traumatising if there is a risk you’re going to come face to face with your perpetrator.”
