A new prison has been completed in Lara but there is no word yet on when it will be taking inmates.
The Western Plains Correctional Centre has more than 1,200 beds and is located in the Barwon Prison precinct.
While it is yet to be opened, staff have been deployed to keep the site secure, according to a report in the Herald Sun.

It comes as figures show the number of prisoners in Victoria dropped in the last five years.
There were 6019 men and 304 women behind bars last November.
