Vehicle access will soon be restricted on a busy Geelong street over the weekends.

From December 1, emergency services and permit holders will be the only vehicles able to access Little Malop Street between Gheringhap and Moorabool streets between 10pm and 5am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

Mayor Stretch Kontelj said it was about ensuring safety of emergency services and revellers.

“That should improve safety, but also should improve the amenity for people using Little Malop Street for hospitality,” he said.

Revellers are being advised they will have to be picked up or dropped off outside that area.

“We have an Uber stand in Malop Street or they can get picked up in Gheringhap Street or in Ryrie Street,” Cr Kontelj said.

“I’m hoping people enjoy the new environment without the risk of cars and people coming into conflict.

“It also makes policing and response for emergency vehicles easier to get into that precinct.”

The street will continue to operate as normal outside those specified times.
