A 44-year-old man from Newport has been remanded to face court in November, charged with trafficking a large quantity of MDMA.

Their arrests were among 1600 people across Australia and New Zealand, during an operation targeting illicit drugs.

Operation Vitreus was held last week, resulting in more than 2,900 charges being laid and over $93 million in drugs seized.

Police said methamphetamine remained the most significant illicit drug threat to the community, with high usage driving a number of harms impacting all Australians.

Detective Superintendent Dave Cowan from Victoria Police said the results from the week were a snapshot of what police regularly see.

“We are at a pivotal point in this fight against illicit drugs, and ultimately, we must challenge the attitudes around the use of illicit drugs in our community,” he said.

“Alongside our partner agencies, we are completely committed to making Victoria as hostile an environment as possible for anyone associated with the trafficking of drugs.

“The success of this week of action should serve as a reminder to anyone in Australia who is involved in illicit drug and organised crime activity: we will find you and we will hold you accountable.”
