Barwon Health is partnering with Deakin University to establish a mental health and well being support centre for the region.
It is part of a consortium partnership, bringing together a network of metropolitan and regional health services.
The facility is being seen as a mental health equivalent of the Peter McCallum Cancer Clinic.
Deakin University Professor Michael Berk said it was a recommendation from the royal commission into mental health.
“We’re going to bring together people with lived experience, researchers and health professionals to do several things,” he said.
“This includes, improving the mental healthcare system, to improve care for adults, to lead cutting edge research and be an engine room for reform across the sector.”
Support has been given to start planning for the centre.
