The Prime Minister has visited the Bellarine, talking to local first-time home buyers who’ve taken up the 5% Deposit Scheme.
Anthony Albanese’s met with Lachie and Brooklyn, a Clifton Springs couple among the more than 260,000 Aussies who’ve taken up the offer.
“This is a fantastic scheme that we have, and it’s part of our $47 billion Homes for Australia plan,” the PM said.
“There’s no program which has been more successful than our 5% deposit for first home buyers scheme […] making an enormous difference for people like Brooklyn and Lachie, locals renting in this local community, thinking that home ownership was out of reach for some time, but because of the five per cent home deposit scheme, because we deal with mortgage insurance and reduce the costs, therefore of borrowing, and enable people to get into home ownership earlier, it’s made an enormous difference.
“Lachie and Brooklyn here are paying off their own mortgage rather than someone else’s, and that gives them a great deal of pride in this home here, which is a beautiful spot where they wanted to live, where they grew up, where they work, where they’re contributing to the community.”
The PM joined Corangamite MP Libby Coker for the visit to Lachie and Brooklyn’s home.
“We talked to them about what it means to be able to own their own home,” Ms Coker said.
“They’ve accessed the five percent deposit scheme, they’ve bought their first home, they’ve worked really hard. What they said to me was this is about an investment in their future, rather than investing in someone else’s future.
“They actually said this is going to be a turning point for them, they’re more likely to start their own family now because they’ve got the security of having their own roof over their head, close to where they work.
“It’s a really fantastic start, and Brooklyn and Lachie today… it was hard to wipe the smiles off their faces, they were so happy.”
The local MP hopes their story inspires other locals to buy their first home under the scheme.
“It’s a great outcome for them and we want more people across Corangamite to take up this opportunity. Across our region, there’s over 4,000 people who have taken up this opportunity and now they have their own home,” she said.
“We want more people to get into a home and we want more people to feel the security that comes with home ownership.”
