Geelong police are warning they will be out in force over the long weekend as Operation Regal gets underway.
The statewide operation will run until late Monday night, targeting offences including speeding, drink and drug driving and distraction.
Senior Sergeant Travis Farnsworth from Geelong Highway Patrol said they were expecting the roads to be busy across the region, asking everyone to be patient.
“It’s going to be as busy as it gets over a long weekend – a lot of people come down from regional Victoria as well as metropolitan areas,” Sr Sgt Farnsworth said.
“We expect the influx sooner rather than later.”
He also urged drivers to be careful when using a GPS in unfamiliar territory.
“Make sure you’re aware of your surroundings before you decide to go the path it takes you.
“It can throw the timings out which puts people into a bit of a panic and they will then speed to get somewhere on time, which can result in a collision or penalty notice.”
