Premier Jacinta Allan is standing by her decision not to kick local MP Darren Cheeseman out of the Labor Party.

She asked the member for South Barwon to resign as Parliamentary Secretary for Education, following allegations of persistent, inappropriate behaviour towards staff in the workplace.

The allegations have not been revealed.

Ms Allan was reportedly made aware of the allegations last Wednesday, before asking Mr Cheeseman to stand down on Friday, which he did.

She said her decision was about ministerial code.

“The allegations were put to me in the context of my responsibilities as upholding the ministerial code of conduct,” she said.

“Inappropriate and persistent behaviour is not appropriate in any workplace.”

He remains the member of South Barwon.

But Shadow Health Minister Georgie Crozier criticised that decision.

“If he can’t be safe to be a junior minister in the government, how can he be safe to be a member of the Labor party,” she said.

Mr Cheeseman has been contacted for comment.
