Hailing a taxi could get more expensive across Geelong.

The Essential Services Commission [ESC] has released its draft decision on prices for metro and regional centres such as Geelong.

It has recommended a fare increase of 5.7 per cent when a taxi is hailed from the street or a taxi rank.

The commission says the proposed change factors in the increase in the minimum wage and the cost of insurance and running a vehicle.

The cost of a three-kilometre trip will go up by 84 cents.

The draft decision does not cover pre-booked fares or rideshare operators.

Marcus Crudden from the ESC said it heard from taxi operators and drivers.

“Passengers now have more choice than ever, with rideshare operators and taxis competing strongly for patronage,” he said.

“Victorians’ transportation needs continue to evolve post-pandemic, and although demand for taxis is still to fully recover, the industry is working hard to ensure taxis remain a viable option for consumers, passengers and operators alike.”

Locals can have their say on the proposed changes here, with the final decision to be released in early September.
