A push for a permanent Geelong Fresh Food Market’s moving to the next phase, after a feasibility study and business case confirmed the need and potential for a regional food destination.

An independent study is recommending a hybrid model with a food market, dining and hospitality precinct.

Local chef Simon Toohey, who is also behind Geelong City Market, said it could be a major local attraction.

“We haven’t solidified a space,” he said.

“We are in the hunt for that kind of thing, whether it’s city adjacent, whether it’s city completely, we’re open to that conversation.”

Simon said the vision would be similar to other major fresh food markets across the country.

“The restaurants can buy the produce from the people internally, and then everything gets circulated within it.

“We have bars and we have a nice nightlife and we create a bustling space which can be utilised from breakfast, for coffees and pastries, all the way to dinner.”

He said there were many steps before it became a reality.
