The state MP for the coast is ramping up criticism of the regions land manager, calling on the Victorian government to “review” the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority (GORCAPA).

Polwarth MP Richard Riordan has described the body as a “secret society”, and says a 2023 motion from the Colac Otway Shire expressing concern with GORCAPA shows local distrust is widespread.

The shire is displeased by delays in getting the Apollo Bay Harbour redevelopment done, particularly as it was given the all clear in 2020 and was due for completion by last year.

Councillors unanimously voted for a motion in August last year that advised GORCAPA and “the relevant Victorian Government Minister/s that the Apollo Bay Harbour Redevelopment should be delivered as per the Development Plan adopted in December 2020.”

That motion also stated that council “expresses its concern” with GORCAPA’S progress on the redevelopment.

Richard Riordan has accused GORCAPA of being a “secret society” (FACEBOOK/RICHARD RIORDAN).

“This motion is by no means a glowing endorsement of the Authorities ability to work with local communities,” Mr Riordan said.

“To date the coastal walk has been abandoned and the urgent repairs and upgrades to the Harbour have not begun.

“No one knows when the community can expect any improvements from what funds are left after consultants, reviews and bureaucracy have taken more than their share.”

Mr Riordan says he’s been “stymied” by the Allan government in his dealings with GORCAPA, and accused the government of sitting in on meetings and “filtering the responses.”

“It is usual practice that a Local MP can interact with local authorities and agencies so as to ensure community debate and concerns are thoroughly heard and dealt with, he said.

“GORCAPA should not be a secret society.”

Geelong Broadcasters has requested comment from GORCAPA.
