Local students are returning to school this week for Term 4, with motorists reminded school zones are back in force.

The Department of Transport has told drivers to slow down around schools, with 40 km/h speed limits in place from Monday, regardless of when your local school is re-opening.

“With school back across Geelong and the Surf Coast, school zones are also in operation from 8am until 9:30am, and again in the afternoon from 2:30pm until 4pm,” Spokesperson Lui Zacher said.

“You can expect extra road, pedestrian and bike traffic around schools and bus stops during drop off and pick up times.”

Adults moving around town have been reminded to keep their eyes peeled and remain extra alert near schools.

“Drivers have a responsibility to be extra cautious and safe travelling near schools as younger children don’t have the same awareness to road safety as adults do,” Zacher said.

“Their behaviour may be unpredictable on the roads.”
