Snap inspections on dairy farms

Snap inspections are being held on dairy businesses in the Otways to try and stop waste ending up in rivers and creeks.

EPA inspectors are conducting compliance and enforcement inspections on local farms.

The environmental watchdog says liquid waste and sewage can pollute waterways through pipes or drains.

EPA Southwest Regional Manager Tanya McAteer said polluted waterways were a risk for people’s health and other species who relied on the water.

“We want businesses to understand their legal responsibility to act to protect the environment,” Ms McAteer said.

“The general environmental duty (GED) of the Environment Protection Act 2017 requires anyone contributing to water pollution to understand their risks, implement controls and regularly review performance of those controls so far as reasonably practicable.”
