Torquay Police Senior Sergeant Aaron Riches said that while officers are doing what they can to identify and arrest offenders, locals need to be careful.
“We notice that offenders are coming down and rumbling through unlocked cars,” Senior Sergeant Riches said.
“They’re occasionally sneaking through the back doors of homes and taking keys from kitchen benches, which is not unusual, and then taking cars and committing crimes with those cars.”
Senior Sergeant Riches said police are looking to crack down on opportunist thieves now, with the thefts expected to continue to rise approaching the warmer months.
“We’re seeing this in the cold months and it’s only going to get warmer,” he said.
“It will be more invitational to offenders to come down here in those warmer evenings
“So that’s why we’re starting the conversation now and getting on the front foot.”
