More than $10-million of taxpayer money has been spent on jail and legal costs for convicted terrorist Abdul Nacer Benbrika in the three years after his 15-year sentence at Barwon Prison.
The Algerian native was held in the Lara facility until his release in December 2023, three years after his initial sentence.
It was during this time the costs were incurred which included spending on housing and legal costs, which averaged out to more than $6,000 a day across the three-year span.
The high figure has prompted calls for scrutiny over Home Affairs Department spending.
Benbrika once planned to run a training camp for terrorists in Ocean Grove, along with his plot to blow up the MCG in 2005.
