A candlelight vigil is being held at Geelong’s Johnstone Park on Friday night, following the attack on Independent MP Helen Haines.

The member for Indi remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

The city of Grater Geelong says City Hall will also be lit up in solidarity with Dr Haines and communities gathering in reflection on the broader issue of aggression and violence at women, particularly those in politics.

Councillor Emma Sinclair said people should be able to participate in public life, represent their communities without worrying about violence or intimidation.

“This vigil is an opportunity for our community to stand in solidarity with Helen Haines, reflect on the impact of this attack and recognise the importance of ensuring women feel safe to participate in public life,” Cr Sinclair said.

“We invite people to come together in a spirit of respect, reflection and support for everyone affected.”
The vigil will be held in the hard court areas of Johnstone Park from 8pm Friday.
