Electricity distributor Powercor is encouraging locals to prepare for a warmer and windier Spring than usual.
The company provides power to Geelong and south west Victoria and says the region is now entering one of the most high risk periods for blackouts.
Spokesman Adam Neeson said the risk of outages caused by storms were higher this time of year, but there were steps residents can take.
“Including back up plans to power outages in your emergency plan, signing up for SMS notifications at powercor.com.au,” he said.
“And be ready by making sure mobile phones, power banks and laptops are charged, and you have access to torches and lamps.”
Powercor says it works with the SES when planning and responding to incidents from major weather events.
