Waterworks: Recycled water for Deakin irrigation

Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus is set to be irrigated by by Geelong’s recycled water.

The state government announcing works will begin on a five and a half million dollar project to connect the Armstrong Creek recycled pipeline to the University.

It will used 100 million litres of recycled water a year.

Barwon Water provided $3.3 million and Deakin University contributed $2.3 million, with the move set to reduced the use of drinking water at the campus by 60 per cent.

Member for Geelong Christine Couzens said it was a great move for the area.

“This is a great example of sustainable water management that both benefits the community and alleviates demand on our precious drinking water.”

Minister for Water Gayle Tierney said it was a great move for the environment – and for our water supplies.

“By switching from drinking water to recycled water to keep its open spaces green, Deakin University is helping protect Geelong’s drinking water supplies.”
