A new study might have you reaching for the rubber gloves and diving into a deep clean once you read the findings.
Vileda H2PRO conducted swab tests in four typical Australian homes, revealing some unsettling truths about household cleanliness. The results showed that kitchens, often the heart of the home, harbor more than just family gatherings—they’re also a hotspot for bacteria and mould linked to serious illnesses. Despite regular cleaning efforts, these hidden dangers were found lurking on kitchen floors.
Even more concerning, the study revealed that 60% of Australians admit to eating food that has fallen on their kitchen floor, unknowingly exposing themselves to these harmful microbes.
Nikki Zarra, Vileda H2PRO spokesperson, addressed the findings: “While the results of this study sound terrifying, everyday exposure to bacteria is normal but consistently high levels – particularly in food preparation areas – can increase health risks, especially for children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.”
The research also highlighted other unhygienic habits that could increase risk. Only one in three Australians (32%) say they always shower before getting into bed, 61% don’t always change their clothes before sitting or lying on their bed, and three in five (60%) admit to eating food off the kitchen floor.
Combined with inadequate cleaning tools, these habits could be putting households at greater risk.
The takeaway? It might be time to grab the disinfectant and give our homes the deep clean it deserves!
