Geelong’s CBD is getting some love, with the council looking to draw more people into the city centre.
Above-ground planter boxes are being installed along Moorabool Street, with better lighting planned for Ryrie Street – aiming for a family-friendly destination.
Mayor Stretch Kontelj said more people that work and live in the city centre, the better.
“I think the secret, as you saw with the (Geelong City) market, once you’ve got the mass of people living and moving through the CBD, you find that the anti-social behaviour disappears as well,” Cr Kontelj said.
“People then feel safe in security of numbers, and that’s why the goal is to have more people living in the CBD.”
Cr Kontelj said bigger projects such as the Cunningham Pier redevelopment and the completion of the new convention centre would also be a big draw card.
