Former Labor MP Darren Cheeseman is set to return to state parliament today.

The member for South Barwon has taken a leave of absence following allegations of inappropriate behaviour.

He was asked to step down as Parliamentary Secretary for Education in late April, before being booted from the Parliamentary Labor Party less than a week later.

He is now listed as an independent on the Victorian Parliament website.

Liberal member for Polwarth Richard Riordan said under new legislation, Mr Cheeseman could be referred to an integrity commission if he continued to stay away from parliament.

“Continued unexplained absences from state parliament and not representing his constituents and not being there for a voice for Geelong region, would definitely qualify under the new legislation,” Mr Riordan said.

He also said the opposition would be keeping a close eye on the local MP.

“It’s been going on for a long time, and Labor simply can’t just hide its misbehaving MPs on the back benches and not insist they represent their constituents.”
