The 2026 Commonwealth Games will not be held in Victoria.
Premier Daniel Andrews has confirmed the news the state will not hold the Games.
He says the real cost of hosting the Games could cost up to $7 billion, not the $2.6 billion initially thought.
Geelong was one of four hubs to host the regional games, when it was first announced, along with Ballarat, Bendigo and Shepparton.
However the City of Greater Geelong had raised concerns earlier this year on how it could provide financial support towards the sporting event.
A regional package has been announced for Victoria, with sporting venues still being built.
Deputy Premier Jacinta Allan said Geelong would still have facilities built.
“For the Armstrong Creek community, they will be seeing the construction of a permanent swimming facility,” she said.
“An aquatic centre that will also have a number of hardcourt facilities associated with it as well.
“In Waurn Ponds there will also be the construction of hardcourt facilities.”
Hockey fields will be built and upgraded in Torquay and at Corio’s Stead Park.
Premier Andrews also announced $1 billion for social and affordable housing in regional Victoria, including Geelong.
